5 Common Appliance Problems & How To Fix Them: A Guide For Ottawa Residents

Your appliances work overtime to keep your family and household running smoothly. Everything from the refrigerator to the washing machine needs your maintenance and attention if you want it to last for years. Fortunately, many of the most common appliance problems only require simple solutions to keep your home in working order.

1.     Washing Machine Smell

Did you know that you sometimes have to wash your washing machine? Often, washing machines are known to build up an odour over time. The easiest way to fix this is to run a cleaning cycle on your washer (if your particular model offers one). If not, you can run an empty load with just a bit of vinegar and baking soda. Afterward, be sure to clean the gaskets and the exterior.

2.     Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes

This is a real hassle when you have to unload the dishwasher just to wash the dishes by hand. Sometimes, this can be caused by an overloaded dishwasher or a bad batch of detergent. There are a few things you can do to ensure that it isn’t the appliance itself, though. First, you can clean the filter and make sure that the spray tubes and arms are in working order. If something seems to be obstructing them, call out an appliance repair person.

3.     Faulty Refrigerator

When did you last clean the coils on your refrigerator? Many homeowners neglect this chore, but it could spell problems. Using a coil brush, clear away pet hair and debris from the coils (located either underneath the fridge or behind the fridge). Clean them until they look good.

Wait a few hours and see if the appliance starts back up. If it doesn’t, you may need professional help.

4.     Faulty Gas Stove Burner

If your gas stove burner doesn’t turn on, it could be due to a buildup of debris on the ignitor. Use a small cleaning brush or toothbrush to gently scrub away any food that overflowed onto the ignitor. When everything looks clean and sparkling again, try turning it on and see if you can get the flame to ignite.

5.     Dryer Not Heating

A common complaint is that the dryer isn’t heating up enough to dry the clothes. This is sometimes an easy fix if the lint filter has an invisible residue. Submerge it in water and see if the water holds. If it does, scrub it with hot water and laundry detergent to get it clean again. This will then allow the hot air to circulate and dry your clothes better.
